1n 1948 Harry Truman was running for re-election as the 33rd president. It was his first time to run for president because he became president the first time when Franklin Roosevelt died while in office. He was running against Thomas Dewey. Every poll predicated Dewey would win in a landslide.
Newsweek said that Dewey had 100 more electoral votes then needed to be elected. The Ft. Lauderdale newspaper said that Dewey would get at least 62% of the vote. The Chicago Tribune had already printed their headline “Dewey Defeats Truman!”
Truman went to bed ahead in the vote but yet convinced that he could not win. However, a secret service agent woke him up at 4:00 in the morning to tell him that he was ahead by over 2 million votes. Despite what everyone was saying Truman was elected. What looked like a sure defeat was turned into a victory.
There may have been a time in your life when you were ready to give up. You felt all the odds were against you. You had convinced yourself you couldn’t win and you won. Throughout life we face many different challenges and at times it may seem like we have no chance to come out on top. It is in those times we can turn to God for our strength. In Psalm 18 David writes of how God saved him when things seemed to be at their darkest. David writes of how he felt overwhelmed (4-5), but then he calls out to God (6). The imagery David uses to describe how God saved him is eye opening. I encourage you sometime this week to take time to read Psalm 18 and grain strength from God that provides strength to the weary, hope for the hopeless, and rest for the weary.

In Him,

Jeremy
