In Matthew 16:13-19, Jesus starts a conversation with his followers, one that we sometimes need to answer ourselves. In verse 13, Jesus asked “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” Jesus knew that people talked a lot, like they do today. He knew that people were talking about Him but he also realized that they didn’t know Him. It holds true today that people like to talk and offer their opinion on subjects they know little about. In verse 14, the followers answered Jesus by saying “Some say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah, and still others say you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” It seems that everyone had an opinion on who Jesus was. They saw Jesus as a good man and they compared Him to other good men, but they didn’t really know Jesus.

Jesus then made it personal for them. He asked them “And who do you say I am?” (v15). Jesus asked for a general response in verse 13, but in verse 15 He wanted them to answer the question for themselves. When we are asked this question, what will our response be? How we answer that question determines how we see our relationship with God. Will we answer that He was a wonderful man who did a lot of great things while He was alive? Or will our answer be similar to Peter’s, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God” (v16). If we acknowledge Christ as the Son of the Living God, He will do the same for us on that fateful day. If we choose not to claim Him now, we will acknowledge Jesus on the day of judgment. But then it will be too late!!
